| One the banks of the river Cere, the Bastide ( walled town of SW France ), was founded in 1277 by the lord of Castelnau to countermatch the king's bastide at Puybrun. The ruins of the 14 th c. Fortifications remain, including the town gate. TheTown Hall is situated in a handsome 16 th c. dwelling, and the ancient streets reveal several 15 th and 18 th c. houses; the cobbled main square is surrounded by covered alleys. The town has conserved the original orthogonal plan as well as numerous vestiges of the ramparts and a fine old manor on prett Manor street. |
